In 1851 there was a total of 97 individuals in the workhouse (excluding the staff), coming from Honiton, Ottery St Mary and various towns and villages - some people were born as far away as Wales! It is interesting to note that there were 48 children aged 16 or under. The ages ranged from 2 months to 88 years old, and there were 8 boys and 6 girls recorded as born in the workhouse. By 1881, the total of people in Honiton Workhouse had reduced to 24, 10 of them being born in Ottery St Mary. 12 were children under 16, and the ages ranged from 2 to 77. Although there were children born in Honiton, none were recorded as having been born in the workhouse.
